The Ontario Realty Corporation (ORC), established in 1993 and now part of Infrastructure Ontario, manages the provincial government’s real estate portfolio of more than 6000 buildings. The portfolio includes offices, courthouses, heritage buildings, correctional facilities, and law enforcement agencies.
Installation of combined heat and power (CHP) systems was one of several options that ORC implemented to achieve its energy savings goal and minimize the greenhouse gases (GHGs) produced as a by-product of its operations. As part of this initiative, a CHP system was installed at The Ontario Government Building, at One Stone Road, in Guelph, Ontario. To reduce GHG emissions, ORC specified selective catalytic reduction equipment for all of its CHP plants. The equipment supplied at One Stone Road emits less than 0.075 grams per brake horsepower per hour (g/bhp/hr) of nitrous oxide, and less than 0.15 g/bhp/hr of carbon monoxide, in accordance with leading industry emission targets.
The CHP project scope of work included:
- Installation of the prime mover with heat recovery, both mechanically and electrically
- Absorption chiller
- Selective catalytic reduction system
- Sound booth that limits the ambient noise to less than 75dBA during CHP operation
- Floating floor that limits the transmission of structure borne noise
